UPDATE: The Saturday night Concert performer has been announced - Joey DeFrancesco + The People!
Joey is an amazing Hammond Organ player who started his performing career in the 80's. At a young age he played with legendary players like Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones and toured with Miles Davis at the age of 17! After that tour, he picked up the trumpet and also performs on it as well as sings. Joey has played with musicians such as Ray Charles, Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, James Moody, John Scofield, Bobby Hutchinson, Jimmy Cobb, John McLaughlin, David Sanborn and many more amazing jazz artists. He has made over 30 recordings, has been nominated three times for a Grammy award, and has topped the critics polls in DownBeat Magazine 11 times over the past 15 years.
Joey's latest album, Joey DeFrancesco + The People - Freedom Project, has just been nominated for Best Instrumental Jazz Album of the Year for the 2017 Grammy's.
Check out the video below of him performing with his trio at Dizzy's Club in New York City. He's playing all the bass lines and the foot pedals all while comping and soloing with his right hand! Also watch for the KILLER drum solo by Jason Brown at about 7:29 and where he picks up the trumpet, after it sat cold, at around the 39 minute mark and still played bass lines while he took a solo. So good!! ( :

Why Idaho?
The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is North America’s largest jazz festival and has been running successfully for over 50 years! This amazing musical opportunity brings together masters in jazz performance/education and students from all over North America in an interactive, creative environment. Students in the Grade 11/12 Jazz Band will have the opportunity to perform a 40 min. set while being adjudicated by 3 very high level jazz educators/clinicians. After their performance, the band will work with one of the clinicians for an intense clinic workshop. Students get a different perspective on the pieces they’ve been working on and the chance to work with a master educator.
Students in our Grade 9/10 Jazz Band generally do not compete in the festival as they are just learning to play this style of music. This year, however, is a bit of an exception. We have a really strong and dedicated band! If we have enough students ready to commit to the hard work it will take to prepare a set for a performance at the festival, I would like to register the Grade 9/10 Jazz Band to compete as well. I understand that this year is a big financial challenge for our grade 9's as they also have the Whistler Music Festival in April. Parents, please check out the letter regarding fundraising and let's see if we can make both of these trips affordable for everyone! In past years we have had many grade 9/10 students attend the festival just for the clinics and concerts and I cannot say enough about how much of a great learning opportunity this is. It is a wonderful introduction to Jazz Performance at its highest level as well as a great team bonding experience for all of OKM's jazz students. Once I receive back all of the permission forms and we have a solid idea of how many members of the 9/10 Jazz Band can commit to participate, we will make the decision on whether we can register as a performing group or not. Either way, I hope that as many students as possible are able to participate in this wonderful learning opportunity!
One of the highlights of the festival is the wide range of clinics that happen throughout the 4 days. Hundreds of clinics are held with a variety of themes including; Artist Features (watch your favourite performer up close and listen to them play and share stories), Master Classes (work on specific instrument techniques with master teachers), Hands On! (bring your instrument and charts and jam with the greats. Learn about improvisation and improv technique), New Ideas (find out what’s new in the world and jazz), Dance Workshops and more. You can’t find a more inspiring educational opportunity in jazz music than getting to work in an intimate setting with some of the top musicians in the world!
The other big highlight of the festival is the concerts that take place every night in the Kibby Dome on campus. Students are exposed to the best of the best as they inspire and perform 3 hour concerts every night. While they haven't announced the concert line-up for this year yet, past performers have included; Tower of Power, Maceo Parker, Ray Brown, The Manhattan Transfer, Bobby McFerrin, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, Esperanza Spalding and many more from all over the world.
The individual learning outcomes that each student will achieve are extensive, varied and based upon the clinics they attend and the instrument they focus on. However, each student will achieve the following main learning outcomes;
- Learn a variety of performance and rehearsal skills through performance and clinics.
- Demonstrate the professionalism, skill, and teamwork needed to perform at different venues.
- Demonstrate an ability to contribute to the physical well-being of self and others while experiencing music
- The ability to demonstrate skills and attitudes appropriate to a range of music experiences in a variety of venues.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation in this extra-curricular event, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Current information will also be posted and updated here regularly so make sure to check back!
