Our jazz band students have worked incredibly hard to prepare and record performances for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, which will be running February 25th-27th. Each group submitted 3 pieces and will all receive an official adjudication with a pro from the festival via zoom. The purpose of these sessions is to hear what we did well, how we can improve and hopefully be inspired to keep digging into our learning. All students are expected to attend these adjudications in the OKM music room with their instruments as we will be playing for our adjudicator. Please speak to Ms. Frederick immediately if you have a conflict. Here are the details:
Adjudications:
Thursday, February 25th
Grade 12 Jazz Band: 8:00am – 8:30am
Grade 12 Combo: 8:45am – 9:05am
Grade 11 Combo: 9:15am – 9:35am
Friday, February 26th
Grade 10 Jazz Band: 3:30pm – 4:00pm
Saturday, February 27th
Grade 11 Jazz Band: 8:00am – 8:30am
Workshops and Concerts:
As part of the festival, there are also virtual workshops and concerts that students can attend. Students have already been given access to sign-up for these workshops and concerts via our google classroom.
These are all free for students as they are covered in our registration fee and have some incredible, world-class musicians giving what are sure to be exciting clinics. All students are required to sign-up and attend a minimum of one virtual clinic and write an accompanying review on it (details on this assignment will be posted in the google classroom) but I highly encourage you to sign-up for them all! If you are unable to watch the clinic at the schedule time, no worries! You will receive a recording link that you can view at any time for up to 90 days.
The final Saturday night concert will be streaming live at 5pm on the 27th. To celebrate the work everyone has put into these pieces and recordings, we will be gathering at OKM to bond together as a team and watch the concert together on a big screen with good sound. I will be ordering in dinner for us to share together as we watch the amazing Camille Thurman perform with a line-up of pro musicians. Food ordering info will be sent through our google classroom as we get closer to the date. In order to ensure we keep our social distancing intact, students will be split into groups to ensure we meet all COVID safety protocols and strict adherence to all policies will be expected of students. All students should have filled out my google classroom form to sign-up for this extra activity.
I'm looking forward to all of these great workshops and to some fantastic performances by world class artists! All students will be viewing their bands performance videos this week with me in class and I will be uploading our performances to the OKM Music website over the next few days so that families can watch them as well.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has been a significant part of the OKM Jazz Program. This festival has been running since the 60's and has been providing world class jazz education and performance opportunities to students from all over North America. After participating in the festival as a student myself in the early 90's, the experiences I had there are a big part of why I decided to go into music as a career! The plan was to attend this festival in person this year, but it became very obvious that was not going to be possible this past summer. Therefore, I was so excited when they announced they would be offering the festival in a virtual format this year!
All Jazz Band 10-12 students are participating in this years virtual festival. Each band has been busy preparing a very challenging set-list over the past few months and will be recording our performances and submitting them to the festival by February 5th. With our performance registrations, students will receive access to many amazing master classes and clinics with some of the top players in the jazz world. All bands will also receive zoom adjudication of their performance with one of the many clinicians at the festival. Each night, the festival will host live streamed concerts that we will have access to. Stay tuned for some more fun info on this as it unfolds!
RECORDING SCHEDULE
It is incredibly important that all students are aware of the recording schedule as it is almost impossible to change at this point with so many groups needing to record before the deadline. Please check the schedule below carefully and put it in your calendar!
Recordings will all take place at OKM in the music room. Students must arrive 15 minutes prior to their recording time to properly set-up, warm-up and get ready to record.
